In the early days of Nazi Germany's invasion of the Soviet Union, Sergeant Nikolai Sirotinin volunteered to stay behind alone with a cannon to delay an advancing enemy tank column. His action bought crucial time for his entire regiment to retreat safely from encirclement. Facing overwhelming odds, he fought on until his final breath. His sacrifice has since been remembered as a symbol of courage during the war's opening phase.
